The Wessex Group is a service provider in the mechanical, electrical, fire and security and commercial catering sectors. It offers, in conjuction with North Dorset Skills Centre in Shaftesbury (Yeovil College) and Southampton City College, modern apprenticeships in:
- Electrical Installation
- Security and Emergency Alarm Systems
- Heating and Ventilating Installation
- Plumbing
Electrical Installation
An apprenticeship in Electrical Installation will equip you with the necessary skills and technical expertise to start a career in this field. On completion of the programme you will become a JIB graded electrician.
Course Content
As part of this 4 year course you will spend time studying electrical modules and theory in the skills centre with the remainder of time being spent gaining practical on-the job training and work placement.
You will study the following electrical modules:
- Health & Safety
- Installing and connecting electrical wiring systems
- Inspecting, testing and commissioning electro-technical systems and equipment
- How to diagnose and correct faults
As part of your apprenticeship, you will also obtain a City and Guilds Certificate.
Assessment is through continuous assignments, internal and external exams and practical assessments both in the workshop and on site.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
You should have achieved English and Maths GCSE Grade C or above (or equivalent)
Security & Emergency Alarm Systems
An apprenticeship in security allows you to specialise in security systems, access control, closed circuit television or fire alarm and emergency lighting, and on completion of the programme you will become a recognised security installer in your chosen field.
Course Content
This 3 year programme is comprised of theory-based study at the skills centre to learn new practical skills and to undertake a City and Guilds Technical Certificate in Security Systems. This is combined with gaining practical work experience with the industry.
Assessment is through internal and external examinations along with course assignments and practical work undertaken both in the workshop and on-site.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
You should have achieved English, Maths & Science GCSE Grade C or above (or equivalent)
Heating and Ventilating
This building services engineering based course covers many skills but is predominantly focussed on the provision of the essential services that allow buildings to operate - such as the heating and ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration systems.
Course Content
This 3 year programme will equip you with the skills necessary to:
- Install systems including central heating, hot and cold water services, chilled water, air conditioning and gas, in industrial and commercial buildings
- Develop specialist skills in installing systems using material such as steel, cooper, iron, plastic and stainless steel
- Conduct practical work experience on building sites such as hospital, factories, schools, shops and offices
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
You must be able to travel to Southampton City College
Plumbing
This plumbing course covers the installation of plumbing systems, how to maintain them and how to decommission systems in a safe and secure manner. As part of the NVQ Level 2 framework, you will have the opportunity to gain an introduction to the Plumbing trade by working towards the achievement of the City and Guilds Certificate in Plumbing.
Course Content - Level 2
During this two year course you will gain practical experience in the workplace and gather evidence to demonstrate competance in:
- Cold water & domestic hot water systems.
- Sanitation & Drainage.
- Pipework for Central Heating.
- Electrical awareness (supply and earthing).
- Environmental awareness.
Assessment is continuous, with additional end-of-module tests and development of a portfolio of evidence.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
You must be aged between 16-24 years old and ideaaly have a minimum of English, Math & Science GCSE grade C (or equivalent) all this is not essential.
CLOSING DATE FOR APPLICATIONS IS FRIDAY 12TH MARCH 2010.
Initial interviews will be held by invitation on Thursday the 8th and Friday 9th of April in Shaftesbury.
