In April 2006 a new law will bring the biggest change to fire safety law for non-domestic properties in over 50 years. The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order will consolidate over 70 separate Acts into one - and it will be taken very seriously.
Here are its main implications:
- you must identify a single ‘Responsible Person’ onsite to carry out a risk assessment and self-regulation.
- that person must demonstrate that any persons employed
for installation, ongoing service and maintenance of fire
precaution works are ‘competent’.
-
you will then be responsible for the provision and ongoing routine maintenance of fire fighting and detection equipment that is identified in the assessment - to the specification of British Standard BS5839 Part 1 2002.
