Clamp down on companies claiming to be police approved

The Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) has raised concern over the misuse of police phrases and pictures to advertise security company services.

Choosing the right security company to protect your home can be difficult. There are numerous factors to consider; does the company have a good reputation, are they well established, do they hold the right type of accreditation, etc. However, if a security company was to portray themselves to you, either through advertisement or verbally that they were ‘police approved’ or ‘police compliant’ or words similar to suggest that the police recommend their company; you should treat this with suspicion.

Such advertisement is prohibited by the police as it provides customers with the impression that the police have fully vetted the company and the consumer is therefore assured of a reliable and professional service.
ACPO has raised concerns before and has again recently instructed the security industry not to use words or images that suggest the police have in any way approved or vetted any security company.

Wessex Fire & Security, a company accredited by the National Security Inspectorate, welcomes this warning by ACPO and would advise potential buyers to be suspicious of any company that currently uses advertisements of this nature as they can create a false sense of security.
