What are your risks?

Stuart Fisher (Wessex Fire & Security Director)

There are many security infringements and fire hazards that could have a major impact on organisations and potentially expose them to threats. Although every orgainsation will have its individual risks, here is a brief rundown on the top fire and security threats facing business today.

Commercial Burglary

Burglary is a term covering a range of offences characterised by the type of property attacked and the motive of the offender. As well as the risk of targeted crime, many burglaries are opportunist crimes and a burglar only needs to spot an open window or an unlocked door to gain entry to your premises.

Fire

Fire and its consequences pose a significant risk to any business large or small and could have wide implications for the business operations. Common causes of fire often include arson, neglect and misuse of electrical wiring, fittings and equipment, overheating of electrical circuits, and problems with extension leads. Smoking is still a major cause of fires in buildings as well as kitchen equipment such as toasters and microwaves.

Vehicle Crime

Vehicle crime is a common risk factor for businesses which are often targets for their expensive contents - audio, stock, valuables etc. Commercial vehicle theft is also a major issue with eight out of every 1000 HGV's stolen every year.

Anti-Social Behavior

Criminal or nuisance behavior can cause alarm or distress to staff or customers and typically includes graffiti, vandalism and low-level harassment and intimidation. Vandalism is a particular issue as it robs companies of time, money, equipment and property.

Internal Crimes

By far the biggest single crime against businesses is theft by employees which makes up two thirds of all offences. The potential of internal crimes taking place are often neglected but can be the most harmful to a company long-term. Internal crimes can include employee theft, fraudelent activity and false accounting.
